Sounds like a good setup. I would use the internal in addition to the external, but that is just me. I love internal filters and they do a great job of skimming the surface of the water. It will not hurt to run both. If you do not use the internal filtration you might have some problems with stagnant water in the internal filter that could be detrimental if released into the main tank, so best to keep the water moving back there by running it.
